YOU DON’T HAVE TO BELIEVE THE OLD STORY
Some beliefs have been with us so long
they no longer feel like beliefs.
They feel like facts.
I’m not good with money.
People always leave.
Life is hard.
My body can’t be trusted.
There’s never enough.
People like me don’t get to have that.
This is just who I am.
But maybe it isn’t who you are.
Maybe it’s simply a thought
you’ve walked through so many times
that there’s now a path worn into the ground.
And because the path is there,
you keep taking it.
That’s how a belief can become a life.
Not because the belief is true.
Because it has become familiar.
We see through its lens.
We anticipate through it,
make choices inside it,
and notice the evidence that confirms it.
Eventually we stop experiencing it as a story we’re telling.
We experience it as reality.
But a path worn into the ground
is still only a path.
And another path can be made.
This is where imagination becomes something much more powerful than fantasy.
Imagination lets you step outside the boundaries of what has already happened.
For a moment, you can stop asking the past what comes next.
You can imagine the relationship before you know who it’s with.
The abundance before you know how it arrives.
The freedom before you’ve solved every problem.
The version of yourself who wakes up and thinks:
Oh. My life is mine.
And you don’t have to force yourself to believe every bit of it.
That’s where people make this too hard.
They imagine some enormous new reality and then immediately ask:
DO I BELIEVE IT YET?
Maybe not.
Who cares?
You’re not trying to win an argument with yourself.
You’re creating somewhere new for your awareness to go.
So instead of demanding certainty, look for something gentler.
Relief.
That tiny loosening inside.
The moment when this will never change becomes:
Maybe it could.
The moment when there’s no way becomes:
I don’t know how yet, but I am curious.
The moment when that kind of life isn’t for me becomes:
What if it is?
That matters.
Because you’ve interrupted the inevitability of the old story.
A door that looked like a wall
has opened one inch.
That’s enough.
You don’t need to leap through it.
Stay there.
Let yourself imagine.
Let yourself want.
Let yourself feel what becomes available when you stop requiring yesterday to dictate tomorrow.
Because the old story has had years of rehearsal.
Of course it feels convincing.
It’s had practice.
Now something else gets practice.
Not denial,
or pretending,
or painting affirmations over pain.
Something deeper.
The willingness to stop confusing familiarity with truth.
You are larger than what you’ve practiced believing.
And your future does not have to be an obedient continuation of your past.
TODAY’S PRACTICE
Choose one sentence about your life that feels fixed.
Something you’ve said so many times you barely notice you’re saying it.
Write it down.
Then ask:
What would I rather believe?
Don’t make yourself believe the answer.
Just try it on.
Imagine the life on the other side of it.
Stay until you feel even the slightest opening.
A breath.
A softening.
A little more room.
That’s enough for today.
You’re making a new path.
